In this activity, students are tasked with using inequalities to plan the ultimate graduation party. Groups will create several compound inequalities to represent budget constraints. Each group will get to add their own personal touch to the party and gain valuable planning experience by researching and selecting real venues and entertainment groups within their budget. At the end of the project, each group creates a presentation pitching their party plan and reflecting on how inequalities helped them to make decisions.
I have used this activity at the start of a unit to help students make connections between inequalities and budgeting. However, during the party planning process students are asked to create and solve an absolute value inequality. My students generally understand absolute value inequalities much better after they have been explicitly taught, so allowing students to skip straight to writing the compound inequality for this task might make more sense to them. You could also use this activity at the conclusion of a unit for students to have a little party planning fun while reviewing and using what they learned!
