With Super Bowl Sunday coming up this weekend I wanted to share an extra credit assignment I give to all my classes this time of year: Super Bowl Math. The Super Bowl isn’t just about touchdowns and commercials—there’s a lot of math behind every aspect of the big game! This worksheet is designed to engage students in discovering how math plays a crucial role in areas like coaching decisions, ticket sales, and even the planning of the halftime show. Most of the questions are designed to be open-ended, giving students the freedom to explore the contributions of statistics, probability, geometry, and/or algebra to the big game. There is only one question that depends on the actual game itself, so students who are unable to watch can still reflect on how math influences the Super Bowl.

This assignment encourages students to recognize that math is all around us, even in something as exciting as the Super Bowl. Students will gain a deeper understanding of how the numbers shape one of the biggest sporting events in the world while watching television – it’s a win for everyone!
