The Classroom Mole: A Math Mystery Game

“The Classroom Mole” is an engaging math mystery game we created, inspired by the 2001 reality TV show “The Mole.” This exciting activity has quickly become a favorite among students, combining mathematical problem-solving with detective work.

In the game, students collaborate to tackle math challenges while trying to identify a secret “mole” within the class who’s attempting to hinder their progress. The game’s popularity stems from its perfect blend of academic content and social intrigue. Students are not only motivated to sharpen their math skills but also to develop critical thinking and observational abilities.

As a teacher, I’ve noticed increased enthusiasm and improved teamwork skills since introducing this game. The element of mystery keeps students on their toes, fostering an atmosphere of fun and friendly competition that makes learning both enjoyable and effective. I almost always have students asking when we are going to play the game again.

Best of all, this game is adaptable to virtually any math topic! We’ve included a sample set of questions on function evaluation. Please let us know your thoughts if you try this game in your classroom!
